In a small cut out area of my garage the previous owner put in a small (4ft x 7ft ) outdoor “kitchen”. It has 4in x 4in terra cotta type tiles. They are all secure ie no loose tiles…can I just lay new tiles on top of them? The internet and big bix stores are basically 50/50 on the idea…big blue said “sure just get a good latex added thinset an stick em on”…big orange said “no way jose” but big orange guy was pushing their air chisels for rent. It’s an extremely low traffic area, because with bbq grill and counter/sink the actual foot traffic area is only about 10 sqft It’s $60 worth of tile going down so if I do have to rip it out a few years down the road its not that big a loss…how ever the tile is discontinued so there’s no getting anymore….should I “risk it and stick it” or “do it 100% right the first time? I included a mock up picture of 2 rows of the new tile on top of the old tile.

Tom’s Answer:
Podcast: Play in new window
Tom: No you can tile over the existing ones.
Charlie: What’s the process for?
Tom: Thinset, tile, grout. Terra cotta doesn’t have a finish on it, so the Thinset is going to adhere just fine.
Charlie: Okay, so just a little Thinset for…
Tom: It’s really very simple and she can tile right over the top of it, traditional Thinset tile.
Tom: And he’s done. Okay, cool.
