Tom, my home is 11 years old 5,000 sf. Stucco. Last year I replaced two water heaters which are in the attic. One water heater was very rusted on the top and the seams on the top and other parts of the water heater.
Now my A/C coils in the attic are rusted and losing freon. I realize my units are 10 yeas old, but should they be this rusted and corroded? What needs to be done to prevent further damage to the other units in the attic? I know I have the roof ridge vents.
Thanks!
Herman
Tom: The only that would make something rust more than just the natural process is either salt of chlorine. Now I know that sounds odd, but if you’re putting chlorine or salt and storing it in a garage that’s attached to the house and the attic is all in one attic that goes throughout from the garage all the way over to the house. It literally could rust everything in the attic. If you’re storing chlorine or salt make sure you store it outside. Salt would be for a water softener or a pool chlorine of course the same thing.
I have a feeling if he looks at this particular situation with that extensive rust that’s exactly what’s happening. If not, then I don’t know what else would be causing something to rust more unusual than it would if it was just in the attic.
