Charlie: Donald writes, “I just had an AC man come to my house and he says the compressor shorted out and the leak in the coil are due to the standard air return and the fresh air return that I installed. The fresh air return is a 12 by 12 filter and the primary filter is a 25 by 17.” Tom, Donald wants to know, “Does that sound right to you?”
Tom: No. It does not. It doesn’t make any sense at all. First off, a compressor shorting out and your leak happening and having to do with air returns makes no sense at all. I mean nothing goes together right. Does he have a leak? You fix it. That could be. Did your compressor go bad? Maybe, but probably because he had the leak. Did the leak come from return air or fresh air return? No, not a leak. You could have it run poorly. You could have some other things happen but not a leak.
Charlie: Why on earth would he say that it came from that? It just makes no sense.
Tom: Because this guy did the work himself and the HVAC contractor wanted to act like the big shot and say, “Don’t touch these units. Only us qualified guys can do it.” They do that all the time. Their egos get in the way of the truth. It’s what I got to say about that.
Charlie: I’ve never seen that before.
Tom: Yeah, me neither.
