Charlie:
Janie in Missouri City. She says she’s replacing her roof, due to hail damage. The roofer suggested adding a solar-powered ventilator, a vent up there on the roof, and they’d still be using ridge vents but just not the whirly bird vents.

Tom:
Good.
Charlie:
Your thoughts?
Tom:
Whirly birds, get rid of. Ridge vents, if you have enough, that’s all I would do. If you … Solar power vents are kind of a fun thing, if it’s part of the package, it’s not costing her any extra, I guess she could go ahead and do it. The only thing, problem I had with it, when it’s running, it pulls air from the ridge vent to feed it. And so, to me, it kind of defeats the purpose unless there’s a special configuration …
Charlie:
Like where’s the hips and stuff like that?
Tom:
Yeah, and it’s not near the ridge vent areas.
Charlie:
Uh-huh (affirmative).
Tom:
But if it’s right near the ridge vent area, then I probably would shy away from it. So everything has its place and, in this case, I don’t know enough to say yes, for sure, or not, but it’s not going to hurt her and I hope that they’re doing it properly, depending what roofer you have. Some roofers just like to sell things and others like to do things properly.
Charlie:
Like, say, Ideal Roofing…
Tom:
Like Ideal Roofing likes to do things properly.
Charlie:
I’m just getting in my minimum daily requirement of shameless shills for our clients.
Tom:
Hey, I live under an Ideal roof. I have … every roof I’ve had in Houston has been an Ideal roof.
