I am going to put Hardie lap siding on a gable on my house.
The gable faces west, so it will take a beating from the sun. ColorPlus is not an option, because I need to try to match the color of other parts of the house and trim that are already painted and do not need re-painting. What would you suggest as the most durable paint for this situation?
Tom
Tom’s answer:
Podcast: Play in new window
Tom: We’ve talked about many paints. We’ve even had paint sponsors for many years on the show, but quite frankly, one of the nice things is Hardy comes pre-primed. So you don’t have to worry about primer. It’s ugly. It’s yellow. And I always make fun with the Hardy guys. Why does he pick yellow? Well, we want to know it’s for Texas so the primer at least is for Texas. That’s a good thing.
Charlie: I heard the reason they did it was because people will – the old primer —
Tom: Yes.
Charlie: Didn’t look so bad. People would put it up and just not get around to painting it.
Tom: Well, now, that could be because yellow is not probably a preferred color.
Charlie: Probably not. Your HOA probably would frown on that.
Tom: Well, unless it – and you know in the old days – I’m going to get to this real quick. But in the old days, when they had lead in the paint and all that.
Charlie: Right.
Tom: Yellow was the best color that would last the longest. And that’s – was something but it is so many decades ago.
Charlie: Growing up in New Hampshire, our house was yellow.
Tom: There’s a reason for that. It’s because –
Charlie: My grandfather was a painter.
Tom: There you go.
Charlie: Seen it.
Tom: But as far as paint goes –
Charlie: Did you know also that yellow is the first color in the color spectrum that your eye perceives?
Tom: No. I had that – no idea on that but –
Charlie: It is. Yellow is the first color you see –
Tom: Is that why the stop and not run the red light or hit the gas really fast yellow light? Is that what that is about?
Charlie: That could be.
Tom: Okay. Anyway, back to the paints. Pittsburgh Manor Hall, one of my favorite. Pratt and Lambert Accolade another one. Benjamin Moore, MooreGuard. They’ve all been paints I’ve used. Probably the most though, is the Pittsburgh Manor Hall. And in Galveston, I will say that held up the best.
