-painted brick
Charlie:
Leslie in League City writes: Several years ago, my brick fireplace was painted. I’d like to remove the paint and put tile over the fireplace, or a new color over the existing. Can the paint be removed? If so, how? Do you recommend just tiling over it? What would you say, Tom?
Podcast: Play in new window
Tom:
If she wants to tile, you tile right over it. If you want to change the color, you repaint it. Can the paint be removed? Yes. Totally big-time expense. How’s that for a sentence? Totally big-time expense. You know what you can do? Do this: call Steve over at Concepts and Concrete. He can put a coating on that brick and make it look like anything she wants. Even new brick.
Charlie:
True that. In fact, our feature video about him giving a floor a marble finish.
Tom:
It’s something- He can do it on a vertical as opposed to horizontal, surface,-
Charlie:
Yes. He can.
Tom:
-but taking off the paint would be really expensive. I would probably do anything else.
Charlie:
Tile, you can just go right over that?
Tom:
Absolutely.
Charlie:
All right.
