Soap products leave a film behind that actually attracts more dirt. Here are three homegrown solutions that perform better than soap-based products:
- Oily stains: Mix ammonia and water
- Mildew: Mix of bleach and water is all you need
- Periodic cleaning: White vinegar and water
In every case, start with a weak mixture and add to it until you’re satisfied with the result. Do not mix these solvents; bleach and ammonia together can produce a poisonous gas.
Grout cleaning best practices
Grout is a porous material. In some ways, that makes it a magnet for dirt. But, keeping it clean is a snap. As with your tile floors, common household products and effort are all it takes to keep your grout clean. Use a half-and-half white vinegar and water mix in a spray bottle. Spray it on.
