Charlie: Zira, she wants to know what’s the better of the two types of window coverings for good insulation and keeping the heat out in the summer, you know, heat in the winter. She’s considering either faux wood blinds, those two inch kind of-
Tom: Mm-hmm (affirmative).
Charlie: – blinds or the cellular honeycomb kind of shades that have the two kinds of-
Charlie: -fabric. We’ve just got those in our bedroom.
Tom: The honeycomb ones are meant for insulation. The little air gap in there’s supposed to be an insulator. Remember this anytime you treat it on the inside, you’re letting the heat come through first and then you’re trying to stop the heat right there between the blinds and the actual glass, so their somewhat effective. The most effective one is always gonna be a solar screen, although a lot of people don’t like ’em so you don’t see ’em as much anymore.
Charlie: Mm-hmm (affirmative).
Tom: Then you have films which try to keep the heat from getting through the glass and then you get into a shade and the shade’s only do so much. But out of the two, the honeycomb will be better.
