Charlie: How do you feel about using rock wool for insulation? If so or if not, why?
Maureen
Tom: Rock wool was used in the early part of the insulation era. That would be at the late ’60s here in Texas time when homes started getting central air conditioning. It was in the ’60s. Air conditioning is very helpful in Texas and Texas is hot.
Charlie: I’m thinking.
Tom:Number one. Okay, number two if Fiberglass and all the insulation products. They just weren’t understood in construction. Rock wool was a local natural product that people started using many years ago, starting in the ’50s as an insulation product. What happens is it just breaks down because it’s a natural product and becomes nothing but a very fine dust. Today we have so many better options. We understand the insulation process so much better. The one thing about rock wool, it has a very high R-value when it’s new but it breaks down very quickly, especially with heat. Don’t use it today.
Charlie: All right. Bottom line, Maureen, go get some Fiberglass insulation. That’s what Tom would recommend.
Tom: Yes. Formaldehyde-free, to be honest
