How many amps of electric service do I need for my 6000 square foot home?

Charlie:
Jim in the Heights asks I’m building a new 6,000 square foot home and the builder’s insisting on 350 amps of service.  Tom, is the extra $2,100 worth it? Is it necessary?

Tom:
Most homes today that’s the starting point. We used to go up to 200 amp. You can go back to homes that had 120. With everything people are doing today, especially the electronics, it really is a lot better and I don’t know if anybody has experienced, I did this week some power surges, power outages, these kind of things. A lot of it sometimes, the dimming of the lights when air conditioner comes on is because the services are really being taxed right now.
