Charlie:
James in Galveston says, “I recently replaced my deck surface boards with treated lumber.” They’re about 650 sq feet of lumber. He wants to know, what’s the proper procedure for coating? He plans on using an opaque stain, but how long should he wait to apply it, and is there any coating that should be used as an undercoat or an overcoat or what have you coat?

Tom:
No undercoats, no overcoats, just the coat that you want to use, the product you’re going to use. Don’t wait. Do it if it’s dry. This waiting time is something that happened in a whole different time in our lives, maybe 25 years ago when they used arsenates and not the copper-based, pressure treating chemicals, things like that. Any time is a good time. Let’s get on it as soon as possible.
