What R-value should I strive for when insulating my attic?

Charlie:
Dottie in Spring writes us. She wants to know what R-value should we strive for when insulating our attic, and do you recommend blowing in fiber glass?

Podcast: Play in new window

Tom:
I like fiber glass, formaldehyde-free fiber glass, actually. Blowing is fine, just did my own attic not too long ago to update it from an R-19, which was the standard back in the early 90’s, to an R-30, in my case. Many compnanies will tell you the standard today is a 38 or a 42, but quite frankly, if you have a radiant barrier, which we do recommended LoMit to everybody, as well as an R-30, it’s going to be the best performing attic you can have. I forget the ventilation too.

Charlie:
That’s true. Yeah, you need ventilation, you need insulation.

Tom:
Okay, insulation, and radiant barrier. Yeah.
