Do I need air filters in the return air grates of my four bedrooms if I have a media filter in the attic?

Charlie: Bobby is here from League City with a question. He says, I have return airs in the ceiling of each of my four bedrooms in a brand new one story house. He’s got a four inch media filter up there in the attic, and the builder says he does not need air filters in the grates.  He says, “Do you recommend them or not for the bedrooms? Coming from a 40 year old home, I may be old school.” What say you?

Podcast: Play in new window

Tom: I wouldn’t call it old school, it’s just a new technique. But as far as the media filter goes, that’s all you need. Do not double the filters, you’ll just restrict the airflow. Not that it would hurt you a lot having so many but it would be totally unnecessary, so don’t waste your money or your time. Just take care of that media filter twice a year.
