Should I replace the old wood in the expansion joints in my driveway?

Charlie:
Larry says he’s got those troublesome expansion joints in his driveway, Tom, and he wants to know, they’ve rotted, should he replace them with treated wood, sand or something else?

Podcast: Play in new window

Tom:
Nothing. They’ve come out with a thing called a gasket.   I guess he could try.

Charlie:
There’s a bunch of them. There’s a bunch of different ones.

Tom:
Yeah. Then you have a modified urethanes that you can goop in there from a big caulk tube with what they call a filler rod which is foam that you shove down there so you don’t have to waste a whole bunch of this stuff. Then, you can try to get pressure treated down there, but usually curls up like a banana if you try to do that. I usually just tell people, “Don’t look down!” There’s usually no good answer for that one.

Charlie:
Don’t look down.

Tom:
You know, I think that’s on of the first questions I ever got on the show and they’re still after thirty years, October, starting our 30th year, there’s no good answer. Oh, okay. How’s this one? It’s more expensive. Call Concepts in Concrete. They actually have a filler; then, they put a hold of beautiful coating on the driveway. It looks absolutely gorgeous.
