My AC unit is 15 years old and leaking freon, should I fix or update?

Charlie:
Tom in Baytown,  He said it looks like I’m going to have to replace my AC coil. It’s leaking freon and I’m looking about a thousand to $1,500 to get that done. Should I consider just putting in a new system? My current one is about 15 years old? I mean a new one will be more efficient.

Podcast: Play in new window

Tom:

So I would have one or two opinions; people come out and see what’s going on.

Charlie:
So if it’s an R-410 you would just replace the coil.

Tom:
I would consider replacing the coil and get another 10 years out of it.

Charlie:
If it’s an R-22?

Tom:
Then I would probably start thinking about a replacement unit.
