I still have water dripping out of my AC’s secondary drain, even though my primary drain is cleared. What’s my problem?

Charlie:
Van in the Woodlands says he’s got a question about his AC, “It’s still dripping out of a secondary drain, even though the primary drain is cleared. Is this a problem?”

Podcast: Play in new window

Tom:
If it’s cleared and it’s still going into the secondary drain, one of two things is happening. One is the bottom of the evaporator coil has rusted out and has holes in it. That is a problem because of the fact that you can’t fix it you need a new evaporator coil. Or a really big pan under it. Now, you laugh but I know people have made big pans and put them under there. Think about the guy last week with his buckets.

Charlie:
Yes.

Tom:
The other thing is, if it’s not tilted properly where the water’s going to the drain.

Charlie:
Okay, right.

Tom:
Those are the two things. If it’s just a tilt issue not a big deal. If it’s all rusted in the bottom and it happens on the older evaporator coils, you just need a new coil. The new one’s actually have a lining in them now so they don’t rust.

Charlie:
I’m guessing this is not a new one.

Tom:
I’m sure.
