There are so many types of insulation, which should I choose?

Podcast: Play in new window

Charlie: David writes: We have three estimates. The first is for blown-in insulation but it doesn’t indicate whether it’s cellulose or fiberglass. The second estimate was almost twice as much and it had blown-in fiberglass insulation. The third was half again more for Cel bar loose fill insulation, which I believe is cellulose. Isn’t Cel-,
Tom: Yeah. Yeah. It’s short for cellulose.
Charlie: Okay.
Tom: Sure.
Charlie: This is all for an attic that ranges between, you’re ready for this, 1,957 square feet and 2,020 square feet depending on which estimated you go by.

Tom: That’s just bad math.
Charlie: Exactly.
Tom: Let me tell you, so there.
Charlie: David wants to know, first of all, which is better, fiberglass or cellulose, and why are the prices so different?
Tom: It’s just different products, but the price is different because somebody can’t do the math, so you got to find out how many square feet you have and then that’s going to be the same for every product you look at. They’re going to be a little different. The best way to go is fiberglass. Stay away from any kind of cellulose product, and Celbar is cellulose. Just stay away from all of them. It’s super cheap. There’s a big markup in the cellulose products, so they make a lot of money on that. That’s why it’s pushed so much.
Fiberglass, it’s a little more tight on the pricing, and if you get estimates for fiberglass only, you’re going to find the prices in line with one another because it’s a more clear-cut product, but you got to get your square footage right.
