Charlie: Do you recommend adding insulation in the walls if a house has asbestos siding
Mike
Tom: It has no difference neither here nor there about what kind of siding, whether it’s Hardie, asbestos or wood or even vinyl for that matter. It’s very difficult to add insulation into the walls of a home unless you’re gutting the inside of the house and doing a remodel. Then you could do it easily.
Charlie: Is difficult code for expensive?
Tom: It’s going to be expensive, but it just doesn’t make any sense. It’s so difficult to find a way to put insulation in those walls without tearing the walls out. That would be the expense right there. The insulation is cheap. Here’s the good thing, only 13% of heat gain on a home in this part of the country come through the walls. I would say in his case, look at the attic, radiant barrier, proper amounts of ventilation and insulation and of course, your air conditioning system. Then you can look at your windows. There’s so many other things you can look at besides trying to put a little bit of foam or fiberglass in a wall.
