Will my roof collapse if I remodel my kitchen?
I am planning to remodel my kitchen this summer. It is on the first floor of a 2-story home. The remodel would include knocking out about 8 ft of wall between the kitchen and formal dining room in order to replace cabinets with a peninsula. The wall is perpendicular to an outside wall. I also would like to knock out another short wall between the kitchen and breakfast room. I suspect that at least one wall, and perhaps both, are load bearing. Do I need to hire a structural engineer before proceeding? I plan to work with a professional kitchen design company, or is this type of project better for a construction company or contractor?
