Charlie: Here’s Patrick. He asks, “do you recommend tankless water heater over conventional tank natural gas models?”
Podcast: Play in new window
Tom: I don’t know if it’s over. I think that’s the word I don’t like in the question. But besides that, they both work in new homes. We put a lot of what we call tankless or on-demand water heaters in homes. A lot of cases in existing home, it’s more difficult to do. One way I do recommend hot showers over cold showers, so whatever you can have, definitely get it.
Charlie: Unless you’re using them for disciplinary purposes.
Tom: You know, it depends on what the situation is, but they both work very well. I have both in my home, and I think people should look into em when they’re building new homes, to go tankless yes.
Charlie: The cost of conversion going from tank to tankless. You will have to be there quite a while to get your pay back on that, right?
Tom: I know he had said earlier a payback issue, but what the beauty is about an on-demand is you never run out.
Charlie: Right.
Tom: So, if you had 20 kids and you’re the old lady in the shoe, and you gotta have a lot of hot water, then on-demand is really gonna outperform, and so it’s a performance deal then a tank, a tank is 40 to 50 gallons and that’s about it. And then you run out and you better get out of the shower or wait a few minutes before you get another one. So this … it’s more performance than it is … you know, the transition from one to the other.
