Can solar power reduce energy bills?

Solar power makes sense: the sun delivers more power in an hour than earth uses in a year. The trick is turning sunshine to electric. Does it make sense for you? Meet a man who says it could be.

Solar Power Reality check:

Our video explains how. But, can it work for you? Let’s say all you’re using solar to power your refrigerator, computer, TV, stereo, motors in your furnace fans and the washer, etc.; everything else you power by gas. Over 24 hours, an average home consumes about 14,400 watt-hours. Solar powering that, according to TLC’s How Stuff Works, would take a 285 square foot panel, costing about $16,000. Meanwhile, that same electric costs about $100 when purchased off the grid making for a long term pay-back.

Solar power makes sense in remote locations, as Dan describes at Industrial Country Market. Or, for small tasks like powering a pool. But, while natural gas-powered electric generation remains relatively cheap, solar is a good idea at too great a price.
