Tom,
I have a house built in 1960. It has no soffit vent, and no ridge vent. The insulation is 2″-3″ at best in the attic. Where should I start first on an upgrade? I do plan on putting in a radiant barrier in the attic.

Tom: Start with a radiant barrier and summertime’s coming up, believe it or not, so it’s a good time to do it. The insulation on the floor of the attic can be upgraded after that and that way you won’t be disturbed, you know, have people disturbing the insulation; that kind of goes in at the end when they’re done in the attic. In fact, I would also say put one of those tents over your drop door that I just had put in my house and I’m really impressed with it.
I had Chris from Insulation Guru, I was going to mention him, because he did my attic and it’s absolutely outstanding and he can take care of all of this stuff too. The last thing you’d do is if you can put a ridge vent in, you can certainly do that, and soffit vents also, but start with a radiant barrier, since it’s on your plan and you’ll get the biggest savings this summer, in case you can’t do it all at once.
