Tom, my house was built in 1978. My question is: Would you recommend re-piping the house or using TDT Ace DuraFlo to coat the pipes? The estimates seem to be very close. I had a leak in the master bedroom downstairs. When the plumber came out the leak had stopped or sealed itself and he could not find it. Which way would you go?
I’ve been listening to your show for years, never called in, but always listened. I Trust your opinion.
Thank you,
Brian
Tom: If you’re not doing anything to the house, you just want to get in, get out, and get your water back going, TDT is the way to go. Just have the pipes renewed. It’s not going to tear up your house. You like your house. You don’t have to move your furniture out. You don’t have to do anything. Now, if you’re doing a major remodel and you’re just gutting the house, tearing the sheet-rock down, then probably even TDT will tell you “Hey, the walls are open, just ago ahead and run some new pipes.” Because they are a plumbing company too and they do that also. Usually in most cases in older homes, that renewal system is really something I highly recommended.
Charlie: If you’re opening up the walls, you would probably go with PEX though, wouldn’t you?
Tom: Yeah, the new piping now would be the PEX products. And they run fast and inexpensive. It just, because you have access. If you don’t have access, that’s where it gets into trouble.
Charlie: Hence, if you’re not remodeling, don’t repipe.
Tom: Yeah, if you just want them in and you want them out, just get it renewed.
