Charlie: David in Memorial writes to us. He says, “I’ve been interested in getting a hot water on demand.” Or I guess that would be a tankless hot water heater?
Tom: Yeah.
Charlie: And he says he got a quote from a plumber, and he’s like, “Yikee-wawa, it was expensive.” But a friend of his put a system in and the main unit was outside near the gas meter and the water main into the house. It seems a much less costly way of putting it in. Are there any problems with mounting these outside, Tom?
Podcast: Play in new window
Tom: It depends on what you buy. If they’re meant to be outside, it’s perfectly fine. In my career, at the end, we were putting them all outside. We were trying to put everything together around where the air conditioning system was outside. The water softener would be out there, the water heater would be out there, the electrical service would be run to that area, so everybody would have enough power. So it depends on the one you buy. But when you put it outside, number one is you eliminate the need for all the venting. And of course, anytime you get closer to a gas meter or an electric run, if that’s what you need, it’s always gonna be less expensive. So it depends on the unit.
