Charlie: Margie, she wants to know is it okay to install, Tom, a solar attic fan on a roof that has ridge vents?
Podcast: Play in new window
Tom: It’s certainly okay to do it. Would I spend the money to do it? Not unless I had a really particular reason to do it, because if you have ridge vents and soffit vents, you’ve completed the package.
Charlie: Right.
Tom: You know more’s not necessarily better, and it also can undo the good that you’ve already got going there from the draw from the soffit vents into the ridge vents, because when that thing kicks on, it’s going to pull from all the vents, and that’s not necessarily a good thing or necessary by any means.
Charlie: Is it possible … now I’ve heard Jim Hardwick from Ideal Roofing talk about … a true Texan, by the way, that Ideal Roofing’s stand on that is that if you have some hip roofs and stuff where you can’t get the runs of ridge vents and stuff, that might be a place to consider those.
Tom: Well, that’s an old point. If you have what you need, you don’t need more.
Charlie: There you go.
Tom: If you have no other choice, those fans … I’d rather use those fans than an electric powered fan, because they can become fire hazard.
Charlie: There you go.
Tom: Those solar fans won’t.
Charlie: We don’t want that.
Tom: They’d just burn out.
