Charlie: Gus up on the north shore he says, “I have a house that was built in 1967. I want to remove a master bedroom shower drain. I don’t need it anymore. So my question is, how do I remove the drain and how or what do I need to cap it?”

Tom: I’m not sure what he’s doing there. If it’s just the concrete and you don’t need that drain anymore, what you could do, and I’ve done this before, it’s very simple. You can go ahead and stuff something down in there like some styrofoam or paper or whatever you might want to about three inches down in the pipe, then go ahead and fill the top of that right above it with some sandcrete or some kind of vinyl concrete patch. Any kind of masonry product, even mortar mix, and let it harden.
And I guess if you’re going to put new flooring over it, or if you’re going to put a tub over it, whatever the case may be, you didn’t put down so far where it’s going to affect the rest of the plumbing but it will just go ahead and cap that off. And it’ll be fine, it’ll sit there forever until somebody discovers it and goes, “Hey maybe I’ll put a shower here.” Then chip it all out.
