I am in the process of remodeling two bathrooms and I am moving some plumbing around.
My plumber discovered that from a previous remodel/previous owner that the plumber never connected to the main drain for both bathrooms and now I have some significant erosion underneath my foundation. Should I fill the void space with sand for now so that I can finish the remodel and then have someone come back and pump mud under the foundation? I have also heard about some expandable foam products. What are your thoughts on the best way to correct this issue?

Tom’s Answer:
Podcast: Play in new window
Tom: If you haven’t had any settling in the foundation, I’m going to do this kind of quick, but it’s such a strange question. First thing is, hook the sewer up right.
Charlie: Thinking.
Tom: Yeah. I mean everybody should know that. And then if the foundation hasn’t moved or anything, just throw sand in there and it’ll be fine because obviously it doesn’t have a big load on that one point of the foundation, thank goodness. But don’t start pumping anything under there unless you have a real problem.
