Charlie: Richard is in Clear Lake . He writes, “I have a 20 year old asphalt roof on a 1963 house with plywood decking. Can I put a metal roof right on that asphalt, or do I need to strip it off and go metal, or just get an asphalt roof again?”
Podcast: Play in new window
Tom: Oh, always strip it off. Especially with a metal roof. A metal roof is a permanent roof, and they’re expensive roofs, and you want to get a good one, but you always want to start with a nice clean slate, so to speak. If you have any decking that’s rotted, or after all those years you want to get it all clean and prepped, all the flashing, put on properly, the proper underlayment. And then when you go to a metal roof, of course, I would always tell you, just because I’m biased, that you should go to Mueller steel roof, because you should see the Mueller people to do that, and talk to your roofer about it also. But the fact of the matter is, you want a nice, nice transition where you’re putting that roof on. Something nice and firm, and without all that garbage below it. You don’t want to just start packing stuff on top of other stuff.
Charlie: Mm-hmm And the Mueller one gives you lots of choices in styles, and costs, and all that?
Tom: Oh yeah. 30, I think 33 different colors. Can you imagine that? And, we’ll come to you-
Charlie: On one roof.
Tom: … but now, on a flat roof it wouldn’t mean so much, because you didn’t see it too much, but on metal roofs on homes, the roof, it is a roof, but it has to look good. It’s like brick, or stone, or hardy, or whatever. It has to all … You have to look at it. It has to come together. So yeah, the Mueller steel roof is the way to go.
Charlie: Mm-hmm Just in case you’re listening, Richard, we didn’t mean to put all 33 colors on one roof.
Tom: You can put-
Charlie: Okay?
Tom: Yeah. Buy one of each color.
Charlie: Right. Then put one little panel on. That’ll look good.
