I’m wanting to build a shelf for a 50″ plasma in my garage.
I’m thinking I’ll 1/4″ x 4″ lag bolt 3 vertical 2x4s into studs, 18″ apart about 24″ long, 2 bolts per. Then set a 15″ deep by 36″ wide frame on top, 2x4s. I’ll add 3 2×4 gussets at 34 degrees (more vert than horiz) Finally sheetrock the whole thing and maybe put a glass top on it. The plasma weighs 91 pounds. I’m wondering if this would hold it?
You might ask why not just use a plasma mount. I just don’t like the looks of them, you can’t get behind the TV, and I have the lumber and drywall already, thought I could save the money with a few lag bolts. I’d like to get this done before the game Sunday, but I don’t know where I can get info on how much the lag bolts can hold in a stud.
