I am looking at putting in a generator transfer switch for a portable generator. What would be a reasonable sized generator to run a/c, water heater, freezers/fridge, and a few bacic lights.

Tom: If you want to run them all at the same time, you need a generator that’s not going to be a little, portable one. Number one. When you people do generators, you have to get realistic. What do you really want to run? If you want to run these things … I did, when I put my generator in … You did too Charlie … Is, you need to have a load analysis done by a master electrician, or whoever owns the company [crosstalk 00:00:21].
I would hope so. Find out exactly what you need. Now, if you want to get a little portable generator, like people do all the time, after a hurricane, and they run their lights at night …
Charlie: Oh Lord.
Tom: … and then they run their refrigerator. Then they turn everything off, and try to run their air conditioner. I mean, it’s a chore, finding out what you can and can’t run. When something clicks on and something clicks off, you could just burn up the generator. It’s always best if you’re going to do it, do it well.
People who end up doing it undersized, because they think that the best way to go … They’re trying to be cheap … They always regret not putting that few extra dollars into the big one.
