HardWood floors add luxury and eye appeal that can increase your home’s resale value. They also feel good under your feet. Choosing the right hardwood floor can be tricky.
Choosing the right hardwood floor
Consider your lifestyle when choosing hardwood floors. Texas Floors’ Jason Whittington shows you how to get a lifetime of use out of the wood floors in your home.
Hardwood floors come in a variety of styles
A solid wood product is just that. It is one solid piece of wood taken directly from the tree. There’s no layers. It’s just cut directly out of it. As the solid wood absorbs moisture, it expands. And if it’s glued down, it doesn’t have anywhere to go, so then you start getting the warping and turning and bending, not unlike a fence in your backyard.
And then there’s an engineered product. It’s actually smaller layers of wood that have been cross plied. And it adds extra strength to the product, and it can handle the moisture and temperature changes that we have here in Houston.
Tips on installing hardwood floors
Once you’ve picked out your favorite wood, it’s time to let it acclimate before it’s installed. With a high humidity here in Houston, it’s very important that the wood that you install in your homes gets adjusted to your particular settings. So if you keep your air on 78 versus 72, run it at that particular temperature that you normally keep it at so your wood will get accustomed to it. It’s very important you keep your floor as clean as possible because that’s what’s going to cause the abrasion, the scratching, if I have an excess of dirt and grime in the floor.
99% of the floors that you’re going to see nowadays come pre-finished out of the box. So there’s not any waxing or polishing. You’re basically just going to be wiping off the dirt that is there, and your floors will stay looking beautiful for years to come.
