Should a Reverse Osmosis unit by-pass the water softener so it doesn’t have to remove the salt the softener puts in?

Ed in Del Webb wants to install a water softening system with a reverse osmosis system for drinking but wonders if the RO unit should by-pass the water softener so it doesn’t have to remove the salt that the softener puts in.  We jumped at the chance to ask John at AquaTex, our HomeShow Pros for everything water,  this question!
