If Hardie plank is painted, how long will it last? Will I every have to paint again?
Karen
Tom: You will never have to paint again. It might not look very good. No, I’m serious, now wait a minute.
Charlie: You don’t have to.
Tom: You really don’t because it’s a fiber cement siding, it comes preprimed anyway, and quite frankly it doesn’t rot.
Charlie: As long as you like that yellow look, right.
Tom: It might be, the yellow holds up, but as far as that goes, no, you don’t have to but of course you’ll want to, to make it look good. How long does a paintjob last? How good of a paint do you buy and how many coats do you put on there. If you buy a really good paint and you put two good coats on there with good caulking, good prep, make sure it’s clean, get someone like Rudy to do it, for example, I bet you’re going to get 15 to 20 years out of it.
Charlie: How long did you get out of yours?
Tom: 1997 to 2014. Can you do the math? 14 and 3, that’s 17 years. Close to it.
Charlie: That’s not bad, and it looked good when you painted it. It wasn’t looking like it was falling off.
Tom: Yeah, and one of the reasons that I had to repaint, believe it or not, was not the Hardie, it was because when I did it, we didn’t have trim that was Hardie and I had cedar as my trim in my house and that was looking pretty grungy.
Charlie: The bottom line for her is good paint, two coats, it’ll last 15 to 20 years.
Tom: Absolutely.
