Where is the black residue in my house coming from?

I purchased a new home in 2008 and now I am noticing black sooty residue on my furniture, floors and mirror. When i clean them it leaves an oily smear, and i have tried washing with detergent liquid. My concern is something might coming thru the vents in my home. I am scheduled to have my vents cleaned next week, but i even had the home builder check for the vents being too close to the furnice in the attic, or the water heater from the pilot light? they said no. I have had the house cleaned by professionals and they said they hadn’t seen anyother houses with this black residue.

Tom: I would like to ask her, but I’m almost positive, so I’m going to say it anyway, she’s burning candles in her house. They have animal fat in them, and it’s leaving soot, just like you said.
Charlie: Right.
Tom: Sooty mess. It’s very difficult to clean up. If you burn a lot of candles, and I know people that burn a lot of candles every night. It makes a terrible mess in the house that is very difficult to clean, and it makes a very unhealthy environment too, so stop the candles.
