Marsha in Piney Point is buying a home that’s 10 years old. She said the gas water heater there has repair issues. The pop off valve and the pilot light both needed replacing and repair. They’ve done that. Now, they’re thinking about replacing it because they go out of town for a couple months during the summer time and they don’t want problems while they’re gone. What do you think? Should they replace it? She also wonders about upgrading to a tankless.

You can always look at the upgrades. If your water heater is giving you problems, you can replace it. When you go out of town, I highly recommend you turn the water off to your house. If you do that, no matter if it’s a brand new water heater or a 13 year old water heater, if it breaks it’s only going to flood so much and then stop. Always turn the water off to the house. As far as, according to the age, if it’s only two years old and they had some problems I’d keep it. If it’s 10 years old, then I would probably buy a new one and probably just replace it with a tank that’s close to the same size and everything else. Money-wise, it’s the cheapest.
