CHARLIE: Gary, in Aubrie Park, Louisiana, do you recommend 3/4 tongue in groove decking or regular 3/4 decking for a pier and beam home?
Podcast: Play in new window
TOM: If you’re talking about floors? Floors would be 1-1/8 inch floor tongue in groove decking. But I wouldn’t call it decking, I’d call it flooring. If he’s calling decking on a roof, then you would go to half inch with clips, and you don’t want tongue in groove on a roof.
CHARLIE: So half inch on the roof?
TOM: Is fine with clips on 16 inch centers rafters, but you do not want to ever have tongue in groove on a roof. Tongue in groove would be for flooring only, and that would be inch and an eighth, not 3/4. If you do 3/4, it’s two layers, and so that’s it.
CHARLIE: Wow.
