Tom, I’m adding insulation to my attic, what kind should I get?

Charlie: Allen is where Eric is sitting and he’s adding some insulation to his house. And he’s looking to put back some insulation on top of the existing insulation in the attic, Tom. And he wants to know, do I need to get the kind with the paper and if so, does it go up or down, and what the R value he should be shooting for?

Podcast: Play in new window

Tom: Anytime you put insulation on top of insulation get it un-faced. If you can’t get it un-faced, or you’re buying it with paper or somebody is giving it to you, just rip the paper off. It comes off very easily. Then go ahead and put it down The R Value that you’re looking for is R30 in this part of the country, and that’s combined with your existing.

Charlie: How do you determine R30?

Tom: If it’s fiberglass it’ll be 14 to inches thick.
