Charlie: Archie in Baytown wants to know, “What are your thoughts on Thompson Seal and Stain for cedar siding and decks?”
Podcast: Play in new window
Tom: There’s a lot of stains and waterproofers. Thompson’s a big brand, Zinsser, goodness, Olympic, there’s just a bunch of them out there. I think Thompson’s probably the most common because of the fact that they sell it at all the big box stores, and usually … and you can read, depending which product you buy … they’re usually waxed-based, and if it’s waxed-based, they look great. They work and do what they say, but they only last about 12 to 18 months, and then the wax just wears off, so it depends what kind of longevity and what kind of look you’re going for, but all of those things will work for a short period of time. If you get into pigments, stains with pigments in there, they will last longer.
Charlie: More pigment …
Tom: More staying power.
