Charlie: Charles in Magnolia has another one for you. He says, “My sun porch is framed with nine light wood doors. They’re not insulated.” You know, the kinds that open up. He says, “It gets real cold in the winter. I’m looking for a solution to insulate those doors without having to reframe the sun porch and install double insulated windows.” Got any ideas for him?
Podcast: Play in new window
Tom: Yeah, he could cover it with styrofoam or something, but this is a typical question in Texas. We got a cold winter. And it drove everybody crazy, because we can’t stand cold weather.
Charlie: Amen.
Tom: And so, my answer would be to heat that room even more and get some more heater systems in there. But as far as insulating a door, a door is a door. You can’t really insulate it, unless you just put styrofoam all over it. And I think that would be just ugly and it just wouldn’t be something you would want to look at.
Charlie: I can’t believe you would recommend styrofoam.
Tom: On a door? I mean, you take, put it on in the winter and we get real cold. Then we take it off and throw it in the garage.
Charlie: Oh okay. Alright.
Tom: So, I don’t know what else you do. It’s like a koozie on a beer can. You can just insulate it, but looking at it isn’t pretty.
Charlie: There’s not a lot you can do there without … I mean, unless you put-
Tom: Replace the doors.
Charlie: Storm windows or something on that side. And that would be ugly as sin.
Tom: You can do storm doors and things, but it would be really expensive too.
Charlie: Sure.
Tom: I would say this. If it looks good, you love the porch, leave it as it is. Don’t go out there when it’s 20 degrees out. Or get some good heating systems in there and really beef it up on those cold days. But let’s face it. That probably in most cases is one week out of the year, maybe two.
Charlie: So, I’m going to write, send him a little email that says, “No.”
Tom: Yeah.
Charlie: Like we said, there’s nothing you can do.
Tom: No.
Charlie: Okay. Stay away when cold.
Tom: Go inside. By the fireplace.
Charlie: Got it. There you go.
