Stinky, smelly shower situation

My upstairs master shower has a horrible smell that seems to be coming from the drain. The smell isn’t a methane smell, it is just like wet sour clothes. I pulled the drain trap two nights ago and there was a lot of hair in the drain that smelled horrible. I cleaned it out and ran hot water down the drain. I thought it fixed the issue but today the smell is back worse than ever.

The shower drains fine and the sinks and toilets near there have no issues either. I don’t think it is a vent issue. We are on a septic system but since this is upstairs I am not sure how that is related. Thanks in advance for your response.

Tom: Number one is you have to make sure that the peat trap is holding water. If you’re looking down there and it’s dry all the time then the peat trap is not working properly because the venting is not working properly and it’s siphoning the peat trap. But if it’s holding water, what I would tell you to do, it’s a bacteria growth. The hot water is not going to help because it’s going to actually accelerate the bacteria growth. Put a cup of bleach down there before you go to bed at night and let it kill all the bacteria and you can rinse it out the next morning. If it’s a bacteria issue, that should take care of it.
