Sticky Faucet Cartridge

I have replaced the cartridge to the single-lever kitchen faucet several times.

At first it is very easy to raise the handle but after 3 or 4 months it becomes very difficult. I’ve been using the plastic version. Is there anything I can do to keep it from becoming so difficult to raise the handle after such a short period of time? Would using a brass cartridge help?
