CHARLIE: Shauna from Copperfield has a question for you Tom, and she says, “We just installed a stack of limestone fireplace … A stack limestone fireplace rather, and new construction. What should I use to seal it?”
Podcast: Play in new window
TOM: There’s a lot of sealers for stone. I would say the most important thing is use a penetrating sealer, don’t use a topical because they can yellow and do some things. So do something that’s gonna penetrate and they’ll be sealers specifically for that. Usually they’ll go under the name of masonry water proofers. So take a look at those, and if it says “Okay for limestone” I’m good with it. Take one stone and do it first, that’s not on their fireplace …
CHARLIE: Yeah, that’s true.
TOM: In case it turns purple on you.
CHARLIE: Tie one around the side that you’re not gonna see all the time.
TOM: Yeah. You must … Gotta have an extra one laying around the house you didn’t put on the …
CHARLIE: Not bad.
TOM: The wall.
CHARLIE: Maybe out by the pool …
TOM: Everybody’s got a few extra. So play with it first, but a penetrating sealers as opposed to topical is the best way to go.
