Charlie: Jane in League City says, I want to put an undermount sink in but I don’t know how to figure out the size of the sink I need to buy.
Tom: Well, Yeah, I know.
Charlie: How do you know what size sink to buy for?
Podcast: Play in new window
Tom: Sinks are standard for the most part and just measure the hole and then buy it for that rough opening. Every appliance, every plumbing fixture has a rough opening that’s required for that particular product. So you just have to find out which sink is going to fit under there. When it’s an undermount, you have a little play under there.
Charlie: Well, therein lies her question. She has the hole.
Tom: Yeah.
Charlie: So she measures the hole. Then what size does she go? Do you do like an inch bigger or sometimes, I mean, how much bigger is it?
Tom: I don’t know if there’s a real … It depends on what you’re buying so there’s not a rule of thumb. It could be an inch, it would be 3/4 of an inch, it could be 1-1/2 inch depending on the setback underneath your sink. Whoever installs it can widen the hole if they have to. They just can’t make it smaller but it should be a standard size. If it’s a double sink it’s going to probably be … I do believe that’s going be a 30 inch but I’d have to go back and measure mine. It’s been a while since I bought a sink but any plumbing supply can help you with that. Here’s what you do. Let’s make it simple for everybody because there’s so much of something going on here. Take the measurement of the hole. Go down to your plumbing supply. Say, “This is the hole I have.” Talk to one of the sales people and say, “What sinks could I choose from you?” I think that would be the best way to go because they do this every day.
