Tom: Stucco in the gulf coast, if it’s traditional stucco, works very well, but people need to realize it has to be painted regularly. More so than Hardie siding. At least every ten years if not sooner, especially when it’s first put on. They mix the color in the stucco, they put it up, they say you don’t have to paint it, but you do. Two coats of Elastomeric paint on top of it and maybe five, six years later another coat. What you want to do is get a mil thickness built up on it because it keeps the water from getting behind it. If you let it go raw, even though the color looks good, it gets hairline cracks and then it starts to rust the metal off the back. Keep it painted. It’s not a maintenance free siding like brick, or even Hardie is more maintenance free than stucco.
