We are looking to replace our AC unit. Evidently, we have a leak in our our evaporator coil now. We have been getting quotes on new units and after looking at your site we think the one stage units are what we prefer. Now, the question is whether or not to replace our R6 ductwork as well. Many are recommending upgrading to the R8, but that’s almost 3k more for our 2500 sq ft house.
The unit we have is a 5 ton Carrier, installed when the house was built in 2000. The present duct work in the attic appears to be in good condition, but has never been cleaned (and we have two cats lol). Do you recommend upgrading to the R8 with a new system? Oh, the unit we are looking at installing is a Carrier 16 SEER with a 10 yr parts, labor, and compressor warranty…thanks in advance!!
Tom: I would not do it if the R6, which hopefully it is, is still in very good shape. Those were standards for years, and he’s going to find a much more efficient system, better results, just by changing the equipment now anyway. Save the $3,000, it’s not worth the expense unless your duct work is damaged. If it’s damaged, then replace the damaged pieces only.
Charlie: With the R8?
Tom: Well, yeah. I was going to go to R8 now, because that’s the new standard. Even if you go buy it, that’s about all they sell. It’s just a little thicker, but it transitions together fine.
