Is pouring vinegar into a bathroom sink to stop a sewer smell a cure or a temporary fix?

Charlie:
Jimmy from Texas City has got it. He lives in a new subdivision, he’s getting a sewer smell in his bathroom sink and they cleared out the trap and poured vinegar in, it seemed to help but he wants to know, is that a cure or a temporary fix.[display podcast]

Tom:
Depends where the smell’s from, If it’s a bacteria in the P trap because it’s sat a while and got kind of raunchy or however you want to put it, it might work. I would’ve used bleach instead of the vinegar because if it is bacteria that does get in P traps, the bleach will kill the bacteria where vinegar won’t. It’ll help clean it out some, vinegars a great cleaning solution, it’s an acid base. The bleach I think would’ve been a better choice, so I would try that. If you have to pour it down there once every six months or so, if you’re having some kind of weird issue because of the water they’re giving you or the way it’s sitting in the P trap, not a big deal. I’d go with bleach over vinegar.
