Can I change roofers after I have already signed a blank contract with another roofer?

CHARLIE:
Jessie in Cypress says the roofer that he’s working with said he’d work directly with his insurance company, “So I signed his contract, but now he won’t give me an estimate and he claims to be waiting for the insurance company to send him an estimate. I signed a blank contract, but the price has not been mentioned yet. I’ve gotten estimates from other roofers and they don’t ask about my insurance.” He wants to know, “Can I go with another roofer or am I stuck with the first one?”

TOM:
You can go with another roofer, but you pay out of pocket because the insurance company now has all rights; he signed his rights away. Never, ever do that. First off, never sign a blank contract.

CHARLIE:
I’m thinking.

TOM:
I’m sorry. You know, Judge Judy would be scolding you terrible right now, this gentleman.

CHARLIE:
I don’t even signed blank checks for my wife. She can sign them herself.

TOM:
I know, it’s got her name on it. As far as that goes, no, you’re stuck. The reason he’s not going to ever tell you what the roof costs is because he’s going to take every penny he can from the insurance company, put on the least amount of roof he possibly can, because no reputable roofer ever would have asked anybody to sign a blank contract. You’re already dealing with a crook, and you really got yourself in a bad position. I might, if I was you, call and talk to your insurance company and see if they have any, and I don’t know if they do, any ideas on how you might be able to get out of this, because this is not a good way to go.

CHARLIE:
He has put himself in what we call in management terms an oppositional relationship.

TOM:
As we can solve most problems here at Home Show Radio, that one, we can’t.
