On my roof framing, should I go 24 or 16 inch centers?

Charlie:
Laurie writes to us from Anderson, Texas. You know where that is Mr. Anderson?

Tom:
No.

Charlie
It is near College Station.

Tom:
Okay.

Charlie:
Okay, so she says she’s got some new home construction going up, roof framing and she wants to know should she go 24 or 16 inch centers on her roof.

Podcast: Play in new window

Tom:
Oh, 16 never 24. If you did 24, you got to go real heavy deck. 16 would be standard, I can’t imagine by going 24 inches on center on a roof. For that matter, almost anywhere …

Charlie:
Where would you do 24 inches on center?

Tom:
1980s, when you were building tract homes.

Charlie:
Okay.

Tom:
That’s just not heard of.
