Charlie:
Sam in San Antonio wrote to us.
Tom:
Okay.
Charlie:
He remembers the good old days when you were on the radio up there.
Tom:
Yep, KTSA.
Charlie:
He spoke, you spoke, of a homemade solution to remove grime, actually he says grim from cabinets … I think he means grime, from cabinets and furniture. What is that recipe?
Podcast: Play in new window
Tom:
Two parts mineral spirits, one part boiled linseed oil. You use a four zero steel wool to apply it. Don’t use a rag because a rag will have the tendency to start a fire.
Charlie:
Two parts …
Tom:
… mineral spirits.
Charlie:
Mineral spirits …
Tom:
One part boiled linseed oil and four zero steel wool. Apply it with that. If you do use a rag to wipe down the excess off of the cabinets … After you’re done soak the rag in water. Just get the rag wet and then put it in a Ziploc bag and dispose of it so it doesn’t smolder.
Charlie:
If you will, explain why you chuckled before answering that question.
Tom:
Well I used to tell people this all the time and I didn’t tell them that part. People would say “Tom, I left this rag out on my floor and it started … I came back and it was all crispy and it did something”. I mean, it’s not going to burst into flames. What it does is smolders and kind of eats the material up. It could cause a fire but most importantly people are just amazed at it. It’s a chemical reaction that those two things do.
