Should I replace my R22 AC System with an R410A unit?

Charlie: Dickie, from Katy, has our first question.  he says, “I listen to your show. I’m trying to explain to my son why you should not buy the new AC systems with R410A.

Podcast: Play in new window

Tom: No, you can buy ’em, it’s fine. People are buying ’em. The whole thing was, and people are hearing this from me, the whole thing about the R22 has changed now. But it’s not that the R410s are going away. They’re very good systems. So if he’s buying a brand new system, and he’s dealing with a company … you know how we talk about Absolute Comfort Air, and you always deal with the company not the systems.

Charlie: Mm-hmm (affirmative) mm-hmm (affirmative)

Tom: And if they say, “Hey, we’ve got this R410A, and we’re gonna put it in. We’re gonna service it for the next 20, 30 years, blah blah blah,” whatever it comes down to, I’m good with that. It’s just, some of us have old R22s, and now you can buy R22 replacement parts and pieces and refrigerant. So sometimes you don’t have to replace the entire unit.

Charlie: There ya go.
